Built on a Belief That
Law Should Empower You

LK William was founded on a simple but powerful conviction: no client should walk into a deal without truly understanding what they're agreeing to. This is who we are, and why we do things differently.

Our Philosophy

The deal you understand
is the deal you control.

Why This Matters

Legal clarity is not
a luxury — it's
your right.

The legal world can feel deliberately opaque. Jargon, complexity, and uncertainty leave clients dependent on advisors they barely know. We do things differently.

At LK William, we believe that when you fully understand a deal — every clause, every consequence, every risk — you can tackle every obstacle with confidence and limit disputes before they arise.

01

Clarity Before Commitment

We walk you through every clause and consequence before you sign.

02

Strategy Over Reaction

We help you anticipate obstacles before they become costly disputes.

03

Relationships Over Transactions

Invested in your long-term outcomes, not just the immediate matter.

A Question We Get Often

Why “William”?

People often ask about the second half of our name. “LK” is straightforward enough — my initials. But “William”? Is there a partner named William hiding somewhere in the building?

There isn't. But there is a William behind the name — just not the one most people expect.

In 1903, a young man named William Ah Ket was admitted to practise law in Victoria, going on to become Australia's first barrister of Asian heritage. He'd grown up in Wangaratta, the son of a Cantonese gold-rush immigrant, at a time when the newly federated nation had just enacted the White Australia Policy. By any measure, the odds were not in his favour.

He practised anyway, and won anyway — including cases where he successfully argued against laws designed specifically to disadvantage Chinese-Australian tradespeople. Sir Robert Menzies, who knew him personally, later remembered him simply as a sound lawyer and a good advocate. Despite that, Ah Ket was never appointed Silk, and never became a judge — opportunities his ability plainly warranted.

What strikes me most about his story isn't just that he broke through — it's how. He didn't fight the system by shouting at it. He fought it by understanding it better than almost anyone else in the room, and by putting that understanding to work for people who had none of it.

That's the idea this firm is built on. Most people don't lose in a legal matter because the law was against them — they lose because they didn't understand it well enough, soon enough. Naming this firm partly after William Ah Ket is a small way of carrying that idea forward.

So no, there's no partner named William. But there's a reason the name is there.
